FRANK WIRE BAMBOO FLY ROD, 7’4” FOR A 5wt LINE
Frank Wire was an Oregon businessman and long-time state Game Commission chair. He built distinctive 5-sided bamboo fly rods during the 1930s-1950s years. All of his rods were built as gifts to his friends. His lifetime production has been estimated as ~200 rods. Many of his rods were made for steelhead fishing, but this is a trout rod, and one of the nicest I have seen.
Casting characteristics of Wire rods are best described as quick. All pentagonal rods tend to be fast, and Wire made certain that his rods would pick up a lot of line quickly and get it back on the water quickly. He relied on Herters for reel seats and ferrules and was able to find a supply of good quality Tonkin cane, not easy during the embargo years. The cane work and finish on this rod shows Frank Wire at his best. This rod features a Herters reel seat, 5 ½” cork grip, hook keeper, black silks tipped red, Mildrum style stripper, steel snakes, blackened ferrules, replacement bag and tube.
