PAUL YOUNG “MIDGE” BAMBOO FLY ROD

This original PHY Midge, SN 4374, is documented in Robert Golder’s Paul Young database, https://www.phydatabase.com/serial-numbered-rods/.  It is a two-piece, two-tip rod, 6’3”, weighing 1 ¾ ounces, and best with a 4wt line.  Features skeleton reel seat with two blackened sliding bands, no hook keeper, Mildrum style stripping guide, gold wraps, truncated Super-Z style ferrules, blued snake guides, original satin bag, and Champion tube.  Super Z pattern ferrules are 14/64”.

Condition is excellent original.  The cork has one chip at the butt and some hook damage.  Varnish is clean and bright, wraps and guides are fine, ferrule fit is tight.  All cane is flawless—no bad seams, repairs, or node problems.  Paul Young cane work is well known, but it is worth mentioning the characteristic random flaming, 2×2 node pattern, and straight taper without swell.

This rod was purchased from the estate of the original owner, C.B. Hall, MD, whose personal label remains on the rod rube.
