ORVIS SHOOTING STAR, 9’6” BAMBOO FLY ROD, 9-10wt

The Shooting Star was one of the very first bamboo fly rods designed for salt water use.  The Orvis “Battenkill Salt Water” antedates the Shooting Star by a few years, and the Shooting Star incorporated some improvements.  The rod features a 2” detachable extension butt, Orvis down-locking aluminum reel seat,  7” cork, hook keeper, four bridge guides on the butt section, 17/64” ferrules, original bag and tube.  Weight is 7 ¼ ounce. Serial number is 36998.  This number does not appear in the database, but the range indicates that it was made in 1965.

It has, however, been back to Orvis for a refit, including re-wrapping the guides and replacing one tip.  The replacement tip is about 3/8” shorter than the original tip.  The tube was re-labeled (or replaced), now with a foil label instead of the earlier paper label.  With either tip, this rod can hog out a very long line.  It is a natural choice for salt water fishing.
