MARRYAT MR 8A FLY REEL, NEW IN BOX

This is a Marryat fly reel, designed by American inventor George Gehrke. The Marryat reels have an interesting history, following the “frameless” design pioneered by Stan Bogdan and popularized by Lee Wulff and Orvis. The drag mechanism employs a one-way roller clutch and a caliper check, patented by Gehrke in 1981.

This reel is SN 028920, all black, and suitable for 4-5-6wt lines. It is from the second generation of these reels, made by Smith LTD in Japan. A later generation of the Marryat reels was made in Switzerland. The name “Marryat” is a tribute to George Selwyn Marryat (1840-1896), an early English dry fly advocate. Set up for right hand wind, but can be changed by a qualified reel person. Comes with box and soft leather case. The cardboard box is a little shopworn. This is a light and tidy little reel, well suited for dry fly trout fishing.
