LEE WULFF “ULTIMATE” SALMON REEL

These reels represent a combination of the best reel making and designing talents in the late 1960s.  The reel was the brainchild of Lee Wulff, who wanted a lightweight reel for Atlantic salmon and salt-water fishing. Stan Bogdan provided the engineering.  Bogdan designed the reel to incorporate rim control, the “frameless” body he later used on the reels he designed for Orvis, and the check he later used in his trout and steelhead reels.   The reels were bench made by Farlows in London and fitted with a leather case.  All the reels were sold by Norm Thompson Outfitters in Portland, Oregon.  According to Hilyard’s book on Bodgan, only 100 were made.

The reels have capacity for 300 yards of backing and a 9wt line.  They are anodized and safe for salt-water use.  Diameter is 3 ½” and spool width is 1.”  This reel is right-hand wind, but can be converted.

Condition of this reel is good, used.  There are nicks and scratches on the finish of the spool rim and the frame rim, as shown.  The leather case is original to the reel, and shows evidence of normal fishing use.
