H.L. LEONARD MODEL 40, 8’ BAMBOO FLY ROD , 5wt.

This is a superb post-fire Leonard 40, a red-wrapped rod with the serial number 1235 on the butt and both tips.  The butt cap is roll stamped HLL / HL Leonard Rod Co. / Maker.  The rod is best with a 5wt line.  Casting characteristics are typical of late Leonard production—smooth, powerful delivery with the classic progressive taper. In my hand, with a DT5 it has a quick pick up and very good middle-distance presentation.  Features down locking reel seat over butternut spacer, 6” cork, hook keeper, moderate swelled butt, translucent red wraps, Mildrum style stripper, blackened snakes, bright NS ferrules, original stiffened bag and brass-capped tube.

Condition shows very few signs of use.  Cork is clean, finish is great, modest use on interior of snake guide finish, ferrules are tight, sections straight.  All in all, Leonard at its best.
