DOWNS CHEST FLY BOX, FOUR TRAY, FLIES

This is a Pennsylvania-style chest fly box made in Williamsport, PA, in the 1980s.  The first version of these chest fly boxes was made by Fye, the second version by Richardson, and this third version by Jim Downs.  The Downs box is made from aircraft-grade composite material which is not subject to denting and crushing as the aluminum versions are.  The first tray has pads for drying flies, the second has 8 compartments, the third tray has 15 compartments, and the fourth tray has 15 compartments.  Each tray has a lid, so the flies are secure.

Flies in the tray number about 50 good dry flies including some sub-surface patterns.   The second tray is signed by the maker,  J.M. Downs, dated 4-8-85.   I do not know of any connection between the J.M. Downs fly boxes and Jim Downes the rod maker. This is a practical fly box capable of holding enough patterns to bewilder the most selective trout.
