AL WILSON / R.L. WINSTON 8' 3" BAMBOO FLY ROD...$700 SOLD

Al Wilson was a rodmaker employed by the R.L. Winston shop in San Francisco during the 1960s and 1970s. He made this rod from Winston materials for his son Peter. Marked on the butt "Made for Peter Wilson / 8' 3" 4 oz #6 AL [Al Wilson]." The cane and other rod parts are Winston. Wraps are Winston tan NCP thread, stripper is Mildrum, snakes are bright, ferrules are fully-wrapped duronze, reel seat is Winston San Francisco, winding check is black composite, bag and tube are not Winston. Fit and all finish details are typical Winston. This rod is the same weight as a typical 8' 2/2 SF-era Winston, but it was made 3' longer. The result is a distinctive feel and a very aggressive casting stroke. The rod throws a flat, tight loop with a 6wt DT or 5wt WF. Condition of wraps, finish, hardware, and cork is excellent. Some soiling on the cork, and a watermark on the cane, as shown. Full provenance on this rod is available on request.
